District 9

District 9 (produced by Peter Jackson, directed by Neill Blomkamp, written by Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell) opens August 14. A group of alien refugees lands on Earth and is sequestered in a camp in South Africa while the World decides what to do with them (and their advanced weapons). Be sure to check out the interactive official website at Sony for more information and lots of cool stuff, and explore the other sites.

Blood: The Last Vampire

Don't know how we missed it: a live action version of a favorite Manga of ours (Blood - The Last Vampire) opens this Friday (July 10) from Sony Pictures. I didn't get to see all episodes of the series on TV (Blood+: Part One), but the Manga DVD is fantastic. Watching the preview trailer, I noticed a lot of the scenes from the animated movie (like the opening scene on the train). The trailer credits say the movie is based on the animated series, so maybe they are expanding on the original DVD story.

2012 Trailer

Here is a link to the official site for Sony's new movie 2012 with the latest trailer. From director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day) it opens on November 13 (a Friday). It's about the events leading up to December 21, 2012, the date the Mayan calendar says the world will end.

This is the same link from previous posts, but now they have the trailer up on it. Happened to catch it on the second night it was out, on a CSI repeat on Spike. It's also the one they showed at Comic Con, I think.

Iron Man Movie site update

Go to this page (from a previous post) and click on the MARVEL icon. It will take you to the marvel.com web pages for the Iron Man movie. There is a lot of information there. Don't know if I missed the link the first time I went there a couple of weeks ago or if they recently added it. Also Register for updates if you are really interested.

Blade Runner Final Cut to contain five versions

More news about Blade Runner: The Final Cut in this article from Variety. It will contain five versions of the film on five discs, and lots of goodies. Coming on December 18.

Blade Runner 25th Anniversary

Blade Runner: The Final Cut will be released in several options on December 18. According to the SciFi.com news story Ridley Scott re-shot some scenes and fixed some errors in his original director's cut version. Spoiler Alert! This news story gives away a major plot detail that I wasn't aware of (but always suspected, as many fans did). It also explains all the changes and the new scenes, so if you like suprises and enjoy seeing and figuring out the new content on your own, don't read this. But buy one of the DVDs in December. :-)

Zatoichi on IFC

IFC (Independent Film Channel) is running Samurai Saturdays again. Every Saturday morning (8:30/7:30c; check your local listings) they show another film in the Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman series from Japan. It was the "blind" part that got my attention when they ran the series last year. Had to see what that was about, if it was serious or just played for fun. Check out the Wiki page to get the details: I won't repeat everything here.

The films are shown in widescreen format with the English subtitles placed in the black space under the active film area. It doesn't block any of the action or scenery. It's neat to see how another culture views its own history. At the time these movies were being made ('60s) Clint Eastwood was making his spaghetti westerns and Sean Connery was making the first series of James Bond movies.

Fight, Zatoichi, Fight coming up on August 25th, if I have my movie details correct, has a very moving story. Ichi assumes responsibility for an infant child when its mother is killed. At the end, when he has to give up the child, and realizes that he loves it and wants to raise it himself, but also that he cannot because of his lifestyle and disability, it shows that the films are more than just action-packed swordplay.

The Zatoichi series includes 26 films and a television series. Just for grins I looked up the records for other film series:

5 - Planet of the Apes (not including the 2001 version, which was a remake)
6 - Rocky
8 - Police Academy
8 - Nightmare on Elm Street
9 - Halloween
10(11) - Star Trek (#11 in 2008)

But I digress . . .

Sitting here working on this blog, I'm watching The Train on Turner Classic Movies while I work. I haven't seen it in awhile; reminds how good it is. No special effects when they had the mangled and wrecked trains. Also looks like Burt (Lancaster) "did his own stunts" when he ran up and then rolled/slid down the hill. He was a circus acrobat before he started his acting career.

Iron Man

It won't show up until 2008, but they already have a web page for it. There is no content there yet so Watch this Space! (I have some posters for it that I got at the World Science Fiction Convention in Los Angeles in '06. They've been working on this for awhile.)
